Bulldogs Tie No. 8 Pepperdine
Fresno State women's soccer picked up its third tie of the year against No. 8 Pepperdine (1-1) on Sunday afternoon in Bulldog Stadium. The Bulldogs are now 0-2-2 on the year against ranked teams and finished their weekend undefeated.
"I feel good about the idea of obviously knowing that we can execute a game plan and make sure that we don't concede anything late in these overtime situations," said Head Coach Brian Zwaschka.
The Waves struck first just over two minutes into the match. Lynn Williams found Anisa Guajardo open at the top of the box. Guajardo sent her eighth goal of the year into the upper left corner.
Fresno State went into the break down 1-0.
With less than 18 minutes on the clock, sophomore Kayla Kret headed in her third goal of the year on a corner by senior Molly Nizzoli to send the match into overtime.
After giving up the early goal, the Bulldogs defense held Pepperdine scoreless for the remaining 108 minutes of play to earn the tie.
Freshman Katie DeVault knocked down a career-high 11 saves. The Bulldogs were outshot by Pepperdine 27-21 but earned more corner kicks, 10-5.
"I think that just in general we got a good performance out of everybody," said Zwaschka. "People were committed to taking risks and attacking because it has such a positive impact on the whole team and we see that as a group we are confident and show the courage to commit to that kind of attack. It brings a lot of players to another level."
Eight Bulldogs put in 100 minutes or more on the pitch in the match.
"We purposefully challenge ourselves with this really difficult non-conference schedule so we would be prepared at what we feel is our maximum," added Zwaschka. We know that we're ready for conference play and we're really looking forward to it."
Fresno State (5-3-3) opens conference play home this Friday, Sept. 30 at 7p.m. against Idaho. The Bulldogs lead the series 7-0 all time. The last time the two programs met was in the 2010 WAC tournament on Nov. 4 when the 'Dogs won the match 3-0. Fresno State took its last home match against the Vandals 1-0 on Oct. 25, 2009
