BULLS AND MUSTANGS BATTLE TO 2-2 DRAW
TAMPA, OCT. 23, 2015 – The USF men’s soccer team stayed undefeated at Corbett Stadium, battling first-place SMU to a 2-2 draw Saturday night.
USF is now 10-3-2 on the season and 5-0-2 in conference play. At home, the Bulls are 8-0-1 and will look to put together an undefeated home record when they play Old Dominion at home on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
Down 2-0, Lindo Mfeka put USF on the board with 12 minutes remaining in the second half. The junior punched in his second goal of the season into the right side of the net to put USF back within one of the Mustangs.
Mfeka would net his second goal of the game, and the equalizer, with just three minutes left in regulation to keep the Bulls in the game. Mfeka’s second goal was effortless as he took a cross from Marcus Epps and just tapped the ball past the SMU keeper into the lower left corner.
SMU got on the board in the 18th minute on a goal by Mauro Cichero. The Mustangs put together back-to-back corners, converting the second one as Cichero headed the ball into the upper left corner.
The Bulls had multiple opportunities to tie the game in the first half. Kendan Anderson shot a low cross into the corner, but SMU keeper Michael Nelson was able to make the save. In the 40th minute, Melvin Becket sent shot just over the cross bar. In the final minute of the first half, Terry Delancy had a beautiful header go just wide.
The Mustangs struck again in the second half in the 71st minute. Kevin Meinecke sent a cross from the 18-yard line to Idrissa Camara who headed the ball into the upper right corner.
For the game, the Bulls outshot SMU 22-9. Both keepers allowed two goals and made four saves on the night. USF also won the corner kick advantage, 10-7.
The Bulls finish non-conference play on Tuesday Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. against Old Dominion. The five seniors on the squad will be recognized before the game.
The men’s soccer program has been one of the most successful on campus over the years, advancing to seven NCAA tournaments in the last eight seasons. The Bulls return 13 letterwinners and five starters from 2014 on top of bringing in the third-ranked signing class according to College Soccer News. They won the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship in 2013 and head coach George Kiefer has also led the Bulls to two Elite Eight appearances and four conference/division titles in his 13 seasons as the head man.
