Bulls Score Late to Force Tie at Ohio
ATHENS, OH - Megan Giesen scored the second goal of the season in the waning seconds of Friday afternoon's game at Ohio, salvaging a 1-1 tie in a crucial Mid-American Conference East Division matchup. Giesen headed in a cross from Taylor Thompson in the 88th minute for a critical point in the standings.
Giesen, who scored her first goal earlier in the season to give UB a double-overtime win at Canisius, continued to show a flair for the dramatics, cashing in on an aggressive push by the offense in the final five minutes of the game. Pushing as many players as possible forward, the team was able to overwhelm the Ohio defense when it mattered most, knotting up a game that Ohio had controlled since its goal in the 56th minute off a rebound.
As the game moved to the first overtime, each team found its best opportunity carom off the frame, and both Aubrey Stahl and Katie Kerr put shots on goal that were denied. In the second overtime period, Kerr had a breakaway goal but her shot passed harmlessly over the goal.
The game was Buffalo's seventh contest that went to overtime this season (fifth in MAC play), and the team remains undefeated in those games, owning a 3-0-4 record. The tie moves Buffalo to 9-4-4 overall and 2-3-4 in conference play, while Ohio falls to second just percentage points behind Kent State in a fiercely competitive division. With Miami winning earlier in the day, Buffalo is currently on the outside looking in as the ninth overall team in the conference (with the top eight teams making the postseason tournament). With current eight-seed Akron and fourth seed Kent State still on the schedule, Buffalo is still in control of its final spot in the standings and can still finish well within the tournament limit.
Sunday will arguably the team's most important match of the season, as Akron (6-7-2, 3-4-2 MAC) comes to UB Stadium for a noon kickoff. Live stats will be available through BuffaloBulls.com.
