Cal Poly Falls at Denver, 2-1
DENVER – Two second-half goals from Denver cancelled out a 29th-minute effort from freshman forward John Chronopoulos as the Cal Poly men’s soccer program’s five-match winning streak was stopped Sunday evening with a 2-1 loss at Denver.
Sophomore goalkeeper Wade Hamilton chalked up five saves – including the 64th-minute stoppage of a Denver penalty attempt – for Cal Poly (7-3-0), which entered Sunday’s match attempting to establish a new program record for successive victories. Outshot 17-6, however, Cal Poly succumbed to two Denver goals inside a 15-minute span.
Cal Poly was held without a shot on target until sophomore winger Chase Minter picked out Chronopoulos with his sixth assist of 2013 in the 29th minute. The goal was the second career strike for Chronopoulos and first since Cal Poly’s 4-2 season-opening win at Drake on Aug. 30.
The Mustangs, however, produced just two more shots on frame the entire match: a 63rd-minute challenge from Chronopoulos that was quickly followed by senior forward George Malki’s test.
At the other end of CIBER FIELD, Denver (4-3-2) equalized on 54 minutes after Hamilton fouled Denver senior defender Theodor Remman in the penalty area following a headed attempt from sophomore midfielder Jordan Schweitzer. Pioneer senior midfielder Cole Chapleski stepped to the spot and buried the second penalty of the year against Cal Poly.
Matters were further compromised for Cal Poly in the 64th minute after sophomore center back Ruben Duran was booked with his first career red card. On 10 men, Cal Poly conceded the game-winning goal on 69 minutes, as Denver sophomore defender Reagan Dunk fed senior midfielder Zach Bolden from outside the penalty area and the latter Pioneer slotted past Hamilton and into the bottom corner of the Mustang net.
Cal Poly opens its 13th season of Big West Conference action when hosting UC Riverside inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Friday, Oct. 4 at 8 p.m.
