Cal Poly Men’s Soccer Program Signs Four
The Cal Poly men’s soccer team helped sustain its attack and defense for future seasons on Tuesday with the joint announcement by first-year head coach Steve Sampson and the Mustang Athletics Department that the program has signed four players to National Letters of Intent with the expectation of joining the team for the 2015 season.
Set to join the Mustang program this August will be midfielders George Grote (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Peter Delkeskamp (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and defenders Noah Chapleski (Broomfield, Colo.) and Louis Heinzer (Sacramento, Calif.).
The 5-10 Grote will join Cal Poly after having competed and trained with Czech Republic First League club FC Banik Ostrava’s U-19 academy program. Prior to departing for the Czech Republic, Grote earned one letter as a freshman at Edison HS, helping the program to a Sunset League championship.
“George is a California resident who has spent his high school career in the Czech Republic and played for an outstanding academy program,” Sampson said. “He will be a tremendous addition to Cal Poly’s attack, most likely in the midfield.”
Ranked as a four-star recruit by TopDrawerSoccer.com and the No. 108 player in CollegeSoccerNews.com’s list of the top high school seniors in the class of 2015, the 5-9 Chapleski was named an NSCAA High School All-American as a sophomore – the youngest player in Colorado state history to earn the honor. Also an NSCAA High School All-Region and All-Northern League first team selection at Broomfield HS, Chapleski competed for the Region IV Olympic Development Program from 2010-12 and joins Cal Poly from Colorado Rush Soccer Club.
“Noah is considered one of the top recruits in the country and is an outstanding student,” Sampson said. “He’ll be used at the left back position or on the left side of midfield. Noah brings a lot of experience from club level to Cal Poly and will compete for a starting position.”
A 2014 All-Pac-8 League selection at San Luis Obispo HS after helping the Tigers to a conference title, the 5-11 Delkeskamp is a three-star recruit by TopDrawerSoccer.com. A member of Eagles Soccer Club, Delkeskamp – academically – is a four-time selection to the Principal’s Honor List at San Luis Obispo HS.
“Peter is an exceptionally talented midfielder and, as a local product of San Luis Obispo, we’re very proud to have someone from the central coast make the Cal Poly squad,” Sampson said. “Peter has incredible vision and great touch on the ball and will most likely play as a holding or attacking midfielder. Aside from being a good player, Peter is an exceptional student with a high GPA in AP courses.”
Another of Cal Poly’s TopDrawerSoccer.com three-star-rated recruits, Heinzer is a four-year captain at Christian Brothers HS with 19 career goals and 24 career assists. Heinzer is also a two-time All-Capital Athletic League selection after helping the Eagles to conference titles in 2013 and 2014 and a two-year combined 32-5-8 record. Christian Brothers HS also captured the California Interscholastic Federation Sac-Joaquin Section title in 2013 while finishing as runners-up last fall. At club level, Heinzer has captained Sacramento United Soccer Club for six years at various age groups.
“Louis is a technically gifted player and an outstanding student,” said Sampson of Heinzer, a four-time honor roll selection. “He’s a versatile player who will compete in a number of different positions for Cal Poly, including center back. Louis is very mature and a bright young man.”
As a team, Cal Poly (8-7-4) finished 2014 with its fourth winning season in the previous five years.
