Cal State Bakersfield men beat UNLV
October 17, 2009
LAS VEGAS — Robbie Gouk tallied a pair of second half goals, leading the Cal State Bakersfield(m) men’s soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponent UNLV Friday in Las Vegas.
Now unbeaten in their last six matches, the win moves the Roadrunners to 6-3-2 overall and 1-0-0 in conference action. UNLV drops to 6-3-2 overall and 0-1-0 in MPSF play.
“We didn’t play quite as well as we have in the past few games, but the goals were superb,” said CSUB Head Coach Simon Tobin. “Robbie came on and scored when we needed it. He had a brilliant free kick and a brilliant header. (UNLV) really went for it, but we were the better team tonight.”
Evan Fassler put the Roadrunners on the board in the opening minute of play, launching a ball from 30 yards out into the top left corner of the net. The goal stood for the remainder of the half and, despite a narrow 4-3 shot advantage by the Rebels, CSUB took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Gouk’s first strike came 10 minutes into play in the second half. Following a Rebel foul, Gouk took the free kick from 35 yards out and blasted it into the upper left corner of the net, giving CSUB a 2-0 advantage.
Less than two minutes later, UNLV’s Andrew Friel broke the potential shutout with an unassisted goal at the 56:24 mark, cutting the Roadrunners’ led in half. But Gouk put the game away in the 79th minute, scoring on a header off of a free kick by Matt Shaxton.
It was the first multi-goal performance by a Roadrunner since Towa Manda scored twice in a 2-2 draw against The Master’s College in 2007.
UNLV finished with a 15-6 shot advantage, but CSUB freshman goalkeeper Eric Shannon came up with eight saves, including seven in the second half, to preserve the win.
The Roadrunners continue their two-match conference road swing Sunday, traveling to Albuquerque to face New Mexico in a 1 p.m. (MST) kick off. The Lobos, ranked No. 14 in the season’s first RPI poll released Monday, are coming off of a 1-0 win over Seattle University Friday night.
