Cal State Fulllerton men defeat Saint Mary's

September 22, 2009
Matt Sanders' header off crisp short passes from Oscar Aguero and Celso Alvarez found the back of the net in the 65th minute and rallied Cal State Fullerton to a 2-1 men's soccer victory Sunday over previously unbeaten Saint Mary's.

The Titans improved to 4-2 by winning their home opener while the Gaels fell to 3-1-2.

Both Alvarez and Aguero dribbled around a defender to set up Sanders near the left post and the senior beat goalkeeper Doug Herrick for his first goal of the season.

Saint Mary's scored in the game's fifth minute when the Gaels executed a rush with Dylan Leslie and Emmanuel Sarabia setting up Justin Grider, who came in alone on Trevor Whiddon for his third goal of the season.

The Titans tied the match in the 40th minute.  Johnathan Birt's throw in carried beyond the far left post and Shay Spitz blasted it in front of the net where it found the leg of defender Tommy Mohoric and caromed into the net.  It was Spitz' second goal of the season.

Whiddon was credited with four saves while Herrik had 2.  The Gaels outshot the hosts, 14-6.

Fullerton hosts the Titan Classic next weekend with Cal State Northridge, Coastal Carolina and Denver.
