Cal women adds two Golden State standouts
California women’s soccer has signed two standout players to National Letters of Intent, head coach Neil McGuire announced Wednesday. Miranda Nild and Anja Koehler will join the Golden Bears in 2015-16.
Koehler is a midfielder out of Oceanside, Calif., where she was a two-time MVP of her Mission Vista High School squad and First Team All-Valley League selection. She helped guide her San Diego Surf club team to the 2010 U-13 National Cup and Region IV Championship.
“Anja is an outstanding player who can play both central defense and holding midfield,” said California head coach Neil McGuire. “She is strong in the air and in the tackle, which will provide us great options on both sides of the ball.”
Nild hails from nearby Castro Valley, where she was a two-time All-East Bay First Team selection in 2013 and 2014. She led her Castro Valley team in scoring with 31 goals and nine assists in 2013 and 38 goals in 2014. She plays club ball with the Mustang Soccer organization.
“Miranda is a very talented offensive player who has the ability to both score and provide for other scorers,” McGuire said. “She is very adept with both feet and has tremendous field vision. She will fit our style very well.”
Both players are also strong academic fits for the Bears.
“Academically both Anja and Miranda are very motivated students who join a long list of Cal players who take great pride in their academics,” McGuire said.
Koehler and Nild bolster a team that has reached the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament in 11 consecutive seasons and produced a number of professional players on both the domestic and international level, which recently has included U.S. Women’s National Team superstar Alex Morgan, New Zealand Football Ferns’ starter Betsy Hassett, Liverpool Ladies players Katrin Omarsdottir and Nina Pedersen, as well as Rachel Mercik of FFC Turbine Potsdam in the Bundesliga. In 2014, Cal produced a 14-6-2 record and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Earlier this year, Cal also added Louisiana State University transfer Emma Fletcher to its roster for 2015-16.
