Campbell defeats Winthrop 3-1; improves to 3-1-1 in last 5 games
October 15, 2011
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Campbell built a 3-0 lead and went on to defeat Winthrop 3-1 Saturday night in Big South Conference men’s soccer action at Eagle Field.
The Camels (6-6-2, 2-2-0 Big South) improved to 3-1-1 in their last five matches, including a 1-1 draw Tuesday at Virginia Tech. Winthrop (4-9-0, 1-3-0) lost for the ninth time in 10 outings and has been outscored by a 27-3 margin in that span.
Keegan Terry put the Camels in front in the 19th minute. Mitchell Cardenas and Justin Franz also scored in a 1:16 span after 75 minutes to seal the victory for CU. The Camels finished the night with a 28-5 advantage in shots, 13-1 in attempts on goal.
Winthrop avoided the shutout in the 86th minute on Mason Lavallet’s first goal of the season.
A junior from Carrollton, Texas, Terry scored his first goal since Sept. 1 to give the Camels the lead. Brian Urioste’s shot hit a Winthrop defender then bounced off the far post and tracked back across the mouth of the goal. Terry beat Eagle keeper Enrique Miranda to the loose ball and poked it into the net for his second strike of the year.
The Camels held a 12-1 edge in shots after 45 minutes of play, but did not add to the score line until the 76th minute. Cardenas sent a free kick into the Winthrop area that was cleared back to the junior midfielder. He settled the ball and struck a shot that curled over the defense and just under the cross bar for this second goal of the season.
Just over a minute later, Franz added his second goal of the year on a free kick from about 40 yards out that glanced off a Winthrop defender and into the net.
Miranda finished with 10 saves on the night, while Camel keeper Ethan Hall did not have a save in the full 90 minutes.
Saturday’s match was the first between the Camels and Winthrop (4-8, 1-2) since the 1993 Big South Tournament semifinal round when CU claimed a 4-2 victory over the Eagles at Greensboro, N.C. Campbell spent the next 17 years as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference before re-joining the Big South last July.
CU stands 27-7-4 in its last 38 games during the month of October. In those contests, CU has out-scored its October competition by a 76-44 margin.
Campbell returns to action next Saturday in a 2:00 p.m. kick-off at UNC Asheville.
