Campbell named UMBC women's asst coach

UMBC head women’s soccer coach Leslie Wray has tabbed Steve Campbell as assistant coach, it was announced today.
Campbell has years of experience at both the collegiate and youth level. The native of Derbyshire, England served as a volunteer men’s soccer assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Maryland from 1996-98. In his last two seasons, the Terrapins won the ACC Tournament championship and then made it to the 1998 NCAA Final Four.
He returned the Maryland in 2001 and spent four seasons as assistant coach for the women’s program. The team reached the NCAA Tournament in 2001, 2002 and 2003, reaching the second round in his second campaign.
"Steve is an outstanding addition to our staff,” head coach Leslie Wray said. “His club coaching
connections and knowledge of the game will have an immediate impact on our program. Steve's teams have always played attractive soccer and I am pleased to have that positive influence in our program."
Moreover, since his graduation from Maryland in 1996, Campbell has coached several youth girls programs in the state of Maryland. From 1996-98 and in 2000, he was the co-coach of the Maryland Olympic Development Program (ODP) U-13 team. In 1999, he coached the Maryland ODP U-19 team. In 2001, he was hired as an ODP Region 1 staff coach. Also, from 1998-2003, the has served as head coach of the Bethesda Dragons U-16 club team. With the Dragons, Campbell helped his team to numerous honors including the Region I championship, Maryland State Championship and Washington Area Girls Soccer (WAGS) title in 1999.
Since 2006, Campbell has served as co-director of coaching for the Freestate Soccer Alliance. The boys and girls club team have captured a total of seven State Cup championships in the last five years.
Campbell also coached boys’ youth soccer from 2003-2008, directing Freestate Elite U16-17 and Bethesda United. His teams won three USTSA Region 1 titles. Since 2000, he has also served as the director of Total Soccer Training, LLC.
Campbell played 49 games as a midfielder with the Terps from 1992-96. He lettered on three teams that reached the NCAA Round of 16 in 1994,1995 and 1996.
Campbell holds a USSF National “A” coaching license. He played for Derby County F.C. youth team and was a member of the England U-18 Schoolboy National Pool before arriving in the U.S. on a full athletic scholarship to the University of Maryland.
