Campbell Travels to Old Dominion Thursday
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell women's soccer will travel to Norfolk, Va., Thursday night to take on the Old Dominion Monarchs at 5 p.m. The Camels hold a 1-5-2 all-time record against Old Dominion.
The Monarchs (0-2-1) are still searching for their first win of the season, while Campbell (1-2-0) will look to clinch its first road win.
After winning a thriller at home against Richmond, the Camels have dropped their last two matches, 1-0 to UNC Wilmington at home and a 3-2 double overtime loss to East Tennessee State.
"We just keep the bigger picture; it's not fun to lose," head coach Stuart Horne said. "At the end of the day the result at East Tennessee State is not going to make or break our season. With this group everything is just a step toward conference.
"We're just trying to get all the pieces to connect at the right time and step it up in critical moments of the game."
Sophomore defender Nicole Connolly netted her first goal of the season, and of her collegiate career, in the loss to ETSU; freshman midfielder Olivia Bethune's assist on the goal was her first collegiate point.
Connolly's goal gives her three points in her last three games; her three points lead the Camels, followed by juniors Ashley Clark, Alexis Prada, Ashley Hartert, Marissa Hartert and senior Kellsey Colstello-Mays with two points. Sophomore midfielderPayton Ormsby and Bethune both have one point.
Junior goalkeepers Samantha Lawson (0-2) and Alexis Connors (1-0) split time in net versus ETSU. Connors started the match but Lawson took the net in the second half and remained in for overtime. Lawson tied a career high against the Bucs' with six saves in the match.
"Neither one has really proven better than the other, so we're rewarding them based on practice," Horne said. "We'll eventually settle down with a number one, two and three."
Through three games the Camels have been outshot 56-29, giving up an average of 18.7 shots per game. The team has also conceded 20 corner kicks, compared to their six earned.
The Monarchs have been outscored 3-1 in three games this season, while also trailing 37-32 in shots.
The Camels will return home Sept. 13 to host in-state foe Western Carolina at Eakes Athletics Complex; kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
