Canisius Plays To Draw With The Citadel
The Canisius College women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at The Citadel (1-2-1) on Sunday afternoon. The result brings the Griffs record to 1-3-1 on the year.
Senior forward Brianna Smith scored her fourth goal of the season in the 45th minute to give the Griffs the early lead. It came on a cross from freshman midfielder Callie Good that Smith was able to beat Bulldogs’ keeper Naomi Carter in the lower left corner. The assist marks Good’s first career point.
The Citadel was able to answer in the waning second of regulation when Mariana Garcia dribbled into the Griffs’ defense and beat senior goalkeeper Megan Tock top-shelf for the game-tying goal.
The goal was the only blemish on Tock’s afternoon, finishing with a season-high nine saves – all of which came in regulation.
Next up for the Griffs will be Detroit at Demske Sports Complex on Friday, Sept. 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Sunday was the third matchup with The Citadel, and the second time the two teams have played to a draw. The Griffs own the all-time series record 1-0-2… Brianna Smith’s goal was her 33rd career goal, just one shy of third on the Griffs’ all-time goal scorers list… Friday’s matchup with Detroit will be the second meeting between the teams, with Detroit winning the lone prior matchup last season.
