Cappuzzo helps Northeastern top UNCW, 1-0
WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Freshman Kayla Cappuzzo scored her second goal of the year to lift the Northeastern women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over UNCW on Friday in CAA play at UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The victory vaults the Huskies (10-4-2, 5-1-0 CAA) back into first place in the CAA standings as Drexel, previously unbeaten in conference play, lost to James Madison, 2-1, on Friday night to drop to 4-1-1. The Dukes also sit at 5-1-0, but the Huskies own the tiebreaker due to their 2-0 victory over JMU on Oct. 5.
Cappuzzo scored in the 31st minute, finishing off a cross from freshman Hannah Lopiccolo from the left wing, as Northeastern won a 10th game in a season for the first time since 2009. Senior Paige Burnett stopped two shots to help the Huskies regain the NCAA lead with 12 shutouts in 16 matches this year.
Northeastern held a 9-5 edge in shot attempts and a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. Cappuzzo, Lopiccolo and freshman Carly Wilhelm each recorded two shots for the Huskies, while Maddie McCormick led the Seahawks (7-8-1, 2-5-0 CAA) with two attempts as well. Lopiccolo's assist on Cappuzzo's goal gives her four helpers on the year, which ties her with Wilhelm for the team lead.
The Huskies will look to strengthen their playoff position on Sunday when they visit the College of Charleston for a 1 p.m. contest.
