LOUDONVILLE, NY – Better late than never. Two days after their would-be season opener was wiped out due to weather, Siena Women’s Soccer made the most of its second chance to kick off its 2017 campaign. Senior captain Michele Tremblay netted three points to lead the Saints to a 3-1 victory over Lafayette at Siena Field. Fellow senior captain Madison Vasquez and junior striker Lindsay Mulligan also scored for Siena which has won nine of its last 11 home openers. Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Dorado stopped five shots for the Saints which improved to 32-6-2 (.825) in non-conference home matches over the past 10 years. After literally getting their feet wet with 46 hard fought scoreless minutes before their would-be season opener Friday night at Big East foe Seton Hall was called off, Siena carried its little bit of momentum in to Sunday. Although the Saints managed just one shot during a defensive battle in the first half, they made it count. Tremblay finished off some nifty passing in tight by freshman striker Darby D’Angelo and junior midfielder Gabby Albano to put Siena in front in the 11th minute. The second half would prove to be much more wide open offensively, as the teams combined for 20 shots in the stanza after totaling just three over the opening 45 minutes. And as a result, each side wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as the teams traded goals just 72 seconds apart within the opening three minutes of the second half. Vasquez pushed the Saints’ lead to two, burying a penalty kick in the 46th minute. Fellow senior captain Kelsey Horst created the opportunity after drawing a foul in the box. But Lafayette answered just over a minute later as Katie Brannigan blasted home a free kick from 25 yards out. However, Siena would put things away in the 74th minute. Senior midfielder Ashley Carpenter played in a corner kick to Tremblay whose shot was redirected in traffic in front by Mulligan to push the Saints’ advantage back to two. Siena recorded 12 second half shots in out-shooting the Leopards 13-10 overall, while both teams created five corners apiece. Kelly O’Brien played the second half and made four saves in goal for Lafayette. Siena will now take to the road for its next three contests, returning to action next weekend with the program’s first-ever trip to the Peach State for the Mercer Invitational. The Saints open play against the host Bears Friday night at 8 p.m. in Macon, Georgia.
