WINONA, Minn. – It was a new day, but the same old story for the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team.
For the seventh time in as many games, the Cardinals found themselves in a game decided by one goal or less Saturday afternoon against Bethel.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, that one-goal decision did not go in their favor, as the Royals scored the game's only goal midway through the second half to hand SMU a 1-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at Ochrymowycz Field.
“Certainly the one-goal games are killing us,” coach Pete Watkins said. “We have to get on the right side of it. But like I told the guys at the end, I really applaud their effort today.”
Goalkeeper Chris Williams (Chicago, Ill.) turned out another solid performance as he made seven saves on the game.
“Chris had another great day for us,” Watkins said. “I was really impressed with his play.”
Juamaine Venter (Rochester, Minn.) led the offensive attack for the Cardinals, producing five shots, while Kameron McKeeth (Woodstock, Ga.) and Mark Thompson (Madison, Wis.) tallied three and one shots, respectively, to give the Cardinals a total of nine.
“The guys battled hard,” Watkins said. “They did everything but score — hit the post, hit the keeper … . It was a good effort on their part.”
The Cardinals, who fall to 0-3-0 in the MIAC and 1-5-1 overall, are back in action on Tuesday, hosting Gustavus in a 7 p.m. conference contest at Ochrymowycz Field.
