Carithers, Nicholson Propel Columbus State to 5-2 Win Over No. 21 Nova Southeastern
St. Augustine, FL – The Columbus State women's soccer team scored three late second half goals as they took down previously undefeated No. 21 Nova Southeastern Friday night at Flagler Field. CSU improves its record to 4-1-1 on the year while NSE drops to 4-1.
The Lady Cougars controlled the flow of the game in the early portion of the match as they had four corner kicks and three shots on goal before Jaci Carithers scored her first career goal at the 14:31 mark. Carithers took a shot off a corner kick by Kayla Brown but had the shot blocked but followed up on the rebound to knock in the game's first goal.
Kelsey Pelletier nearly made it 2-0 four minutes later on her first shot attempt of the night, but a Nova Southeastern defender saved the potential goal from going in.
Shanoska Young tied the game up at 1-1 as she netted her team best fourth goal in the 21st minute.
CSU kept on pressing the backline and goalkeeper Chrissy Hy but were unable to crack through in the first half. Like they did Wednesday night versus West Alabama, the Lady Cougars were able to score in the opening minutes of the second half, this one coming just 19 seconds into the closing half. Kiana Nicholson put Columbus State as she scored her second goal in as many games which was set up by Stephanie Lowery.
Nova Southeastern, the defending Sunshine State Conference regular reason champions, showed their resiliency as the scored the equalizer again. Sierra Lelii knocked in her second goal of the year in the 48th minute from 25 yards out.
Both sides would be held scoreless for the next 40 minutes before Carithers had another first, this one her first game-winning goal with 2:58 remaining in the contest. Less than a minute later Emily Husted fired a shot from the right side of the box across the grain and into the left side netting. The scoring flurry continued as Nicholson completed the scoring in the match in the 89th minute.
Mary Mancin picked up the win for the Lady Cougars improving her mark to 4-1-1 on the year while Chrissy Hy picked up the loss.
Columbus State returns to the pitch on Sunday, September 18 when it takes on Flagler in a Peach Belt Conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
