October 4, 2011
Burnaby, BC - Carlo Basso of the SFU Clan men’s soccer team has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week for men’s soccer.
Basso (Coquitlam, BC) scored three goals in two games for the Clan last week. His first came against the Saint Martin’s Saints. The Clan visited Lacey, WA to take on SMU last Wednesday and came home with a convincing 5-0 victory. Basso’s goal in the 10th minute off a cross from five yards out held up as the game winning goal.
On Saturday, the 6’4”, sophomore was instrumental in SFU’s 4-3 victory over their rivals from Seattle Pacific University. He scored the first goal of the game, unassisted; in the 18th minute to give SFU the early lead and then scored his second goal of the game in the 47th minute, which gave SFU a 2-0 lead at the time. The goals would prove to be vital as SPU mounted a comeback in the second half, but Basso’s teammates netted two more goals to give the Clan the 4-3 victory.
Basso leads the Clan and is second in the GNAC with seven goals on the year.
“Carlo was fantastic in our last two games as he has been all season,” said Head Coach Alan Koch. “He scored a very composed goal to get us going at Saint Martin’s and helped settle us down with a rocket against Seattle Pacific. He works tirelessly for the team and is fully deserving of the three goals he scored this week.”
Basso and the Clan will now head to Hawaii for their next three games. The team opens their Hawaii trip against BYU-Hawaii tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 PM. They then have a couple of days off before facing Hawaii Pacific on Saturday at 7:00 PM and wrap up the trip next Monday when they take on the University of Hawaii Hilo at 3:00 PM.
They return to Terry Fox Field to take on Northwest Nazarene University on Thursday, October 20 at 7:30 PM.
