Carter Lifts NU Past Fairfield In 2OT, 1-0
FAIRFIELD, Conn. --- Freshman Terence Carter made his first collegiate goal a game-winner as the Northeastern men's soccer team defeated Fairfield on the road on Saturday night in a double overtime thriller, 1-0. The Huskies (4-1-0) earned its third double overtime victory of the season on Carter's goal in the 109th minute.
Carter scored with 1:31 in extra time when Don Anding crossed the ball over to Carter in the box, and the London, England native sent a sliding shot past Stags goalkeeper Michael O'Keeffe (five saves).
Fairfield outshot the Huskies 12-10 for the match and had five corners to NU's three. NU goalkeeper Dylan Faber made five saves to secure his first career shutout.
It was a back and forth battle for much of the first half, as the Huskies held a narrow 5-3 edge in shots. Anding had two of NU's three shots on goal during the opening 45 minutes, and Northeastern also generated two corner kick opportunities.
Fairfield started to dictate the tempo of the game as the game moved to the second half, outshooting NU 5-2 and consistently testing Faber. The Anchorage, Alaska native and the Huskies defense remained solid, however, to keep the game scoreless and send the match into overtime.
Faber kept Northeastern in the game during extra time, making several big saves, including two in a span of 30 seconds in the 95th minute. The Stags were awarded two corner kicks during the first overtime, but Northeastern did not allow any further chances.
The second overtime saw the Huskies begin to regain control, outshooting the Stags 3-1 in the final frame before Carter ended it with his first collegiate tally.
Northeastern closes out its three-game road trip next Saturday as the Huskies kickoff conference play at William & Mary. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
