Cat Walker Scores Game-Winner at Wyoming
San Diego State senior Cat Walker scored the game-winning goal and the Aztec defensive unit continued to be rock solid as SDSU shut out Wyoming, 1-0, Friday afternoon at Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex in Laramie. The win propels the Aztecs to 8-6-3 (2-1-1 Mountain West) and snaps the Cowgirls’ (9-5-3; 2-1-1 MW) nine-game unbeaten streak.
SDSU enjoyed the first scoring chance of the game and took advantage of the opportunity, denting the scoreboard just five minutes, 47 seconds into the game. Sophie Metz sent a ball across the box to where Walker was waiting and the senior slotted her shot into the lower left corner.
The goal was the midfielder’s team-leading seventh of the season and 15th point of 2011. The game-winning score was also her third of the season, which is tops among all Aztecs.
For Metz, the assist was her second of the season and sixth point. She now has four points in Mountain West action and is tied with Hannah Keane for the team lead.
The rest of the first half was evenly played as Wyoming enjoyed a 5-3 advantage in shots, but both teams were credited with just one shot on goal. Each side, meanwhile, attempted just one corner kick through the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Cowgirls outshot the Aztecs, 6-5, but SDSU had five on goal to Wyoming’s three. The Cowgirls started to aggressively attack, as evidenced by their 5-1 corner kick advantage, but the Aztecs did not break as they secured their eighth shutout of the year.
As mentioned earlier, San Diego State has been stellar defensively. The Aztecs have given up just one goal in the last 385 minutes, 45 seconds, and have shut out their opponents on the road for nearly 300 minutes (295:45). Additionally, SDSU has allowed a league-low one goal through four conference games.
San Diego State goalkeeper Rachel Boaz recorded four saves in earning her sixth shutout of 2011. With her effort, the redshirt freshman lowered her MW-leading goals-against average to 0.24 (conference games only).
The Aztecs return to action on Sunday when they face Air Force at the United States Air Force Academy. The game is slated for an 11 a.m. MT start.
