‘Cats Strike Twice in Victory Over Valpo
EVANSTON, Ill. – Two Wildcats scored goals in the second half on Sunday at New Trier HS as the Northwestern (2-0-0) captured its second-consecutive shutout with a 2-0 win over Valparaiso (0-2-0). Senior Nandi Mehta tallied her first goal of the season in the in the 51st minute, while sophomore Maria Fayeulle provided another in the 87th minute to seal the victory for NU.
For the first time in program history, the Wildcats held their opponents scoreless for two-straight games to open the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Clem made one save in the net to earn her 11th career shutout.
After a scoreless first half in which the Wildcats had a 7-3 advantage on shots, the scoring opened early in the second frame. Chicago's Big Ten Team drew a foul to set up Mehta with a free kick just outside the box. The senior co-captain nailed a shot over Valpo's back line and through keeper Drew Moulton's outstretched arms.
The #B1GCats added to their lead with an insurance goal in the final minutes of play. Junior Kaitlin Moore found Fayeulle who went head on with the goalkeeper and sent home a powerful shot low to the far post, marking the second goal of the year for the sophomore forward.
Mehta and Fayeulle's goals were two of just four shots for the Wildcats in the second half, but both paid dividends as they found the back of the net. The NU defense continued to hold off the Crusaders' attack as Clem's lone save came in the 76th minute.
Northwestern hits the road next weekend for a pair of games against Boston University and Santa Clara. The Wildcats take on the Terriers in Milwaukee, Wisc., (Marquette – Valley Fields) on Friday, Aug. 28, before facing the Broncos in the Notre Dame Invitational on Sunday. Kick off is set for 5 p.m., and 10 a.m., respectively.
