CC Battles to 0-0 Tie With Colorado
August 19, 2012

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado College remained unbeaten after battling to a 0-0 tie against the University of Colorado on Sunday afternoon at Stewart Field.

But the Tigers were not satisfied with the outcome.

Despite putting constant pressure on the Buffs during most of the second half and 20 minutes of overtime, Colorado College was unable to notch the go-ahead goal and CU escaped with possession of the Colorado Cup for the second year in a row.

Both teams completed the weekend with a 1-0-1 record, but Colorado claimed the crown on a tie-breaker – a 3-1 goal differential.

“When I talked to the team after the game, they all looked like we just lost,” head coach Geoff Bennett said. “That’s a great attitude four our team to have. They expect to win every game. The frustration and disappointment will help push us to another level.”

The Tigers launched a total of 12 shots, compared to just six for the Buffaloes. CC enjoyed an 8-2 advantage during the final 65 minutes when CU packed in its defense in an effort to preserve the tie.

Colorado College, which also finished with an 8-4 edge in corner kicks, nearly broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute, but Jaclyn Silsby’s shot from center of the box went just over the crossbar.

“We didn’t finish our chances,” Bennett said. “The hardest thing at the beginning of the year is to find your rhythm up top. We had good rhythm at times. We’re 100 times ahead of where we were last year at this point.”

The Buffs came within inches of scoring with 5:22 remaining in the first overtime, but senior midfielder Shaye Marshall hit the center of the crossbar with a drive from 15 yards. That proved to be the visitor’s best scoring opportunity of the game.

The Colorado College defense allowed just one shot on goal and Kate Scheele became the first freshman goaltender to record back-to-back shutouts in Geneva Sills in 2005.

“I’m very proud of our back line,” senior defender/co-captain Kelly Browne said. “We could have cleaned up our touches a little bit, but I don’t think we could have played much better. This was a good weekend to work off of and build from here.”

Junior goalkeeper Annie Brunner made six saves for CU. She also got some help with a little more than 12 minutes remaining in the first half when one of her defenders blocked a shot by sophomore midfielder Jessie Ayers from the middle of the box.

Colorado College makes its second trip to Greeley, Colo., in a span of eight days when the Tigers visit the University of Northern Colorado on Friday night.
