CCSU Tops Yale
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – One mistake in an otherwise very strong performance was enough to doom the Yale men’s soccer team on Sunday afternoon.
Ryan Taylor intercepted a clear at the top of the box, dribbled to the right wing and got off a shot that deflected off a Yale defender and in early in the second half as Central Connecticut edged the Bulldogs 1-0 at Reese Stadium.
“Our ball movement was great, our mobility was great,” said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins. “We had every kind of scoring opportunity imaginable.”
In what has become all too familiar recently, the Bulldogs simply couldn’t convert.
Following Taylor’s goal, Yale was dominant. The Bulldogs fired 15 shots at the Central goa in the second halfl, many of them grade A chances, and had nine corner kicks. But for the fourth straight game, Yale had nothing to show for it.
“It’s hard to explain,” Tompkins said.
Still, Tompkins knows his team will continue to fight.
“We have to keep persevering,” he said. “I know it would be false to say we are not playing well.”
The Bulldogs (0-4-1) finished with a 20-13 edge in shots and a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman Ollie Iselin was particularly active. He had four of the shots, all good opportunities. Central goalkeeper Josef Abele made a couple of nice saves to deny him, and Iselin narrowly missed the net on a couple of occasions.
The Blue Devils (3-2) improved to 3-2 with the win.
