CCSU Women's Soccer Drops Home Opener
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team fell to St. John's at the CCSU Soccer Field Friday night in their 2013 home opener by a score of 4-0. With the loss, the Blue Devils' record drops to 0-3-0 while the Red Storm improves to 5-0-0. Freshman Christiana Solomou landed all three of her shots on goal to lead CCSU on the offense.
Defensively, senior Nikola Deiter registered six saves in the first half of play before freshman Nikki Turley entered her first collegiate game between the posts to take her turn and add two saves of her own.
The CCSU defense started the game strong, rendering the threatening Red Storm scoreless until 16 minutes into the first half when a shot from the left corner of the box from St. John's Rachel Daly landed low in the goal to put the Blue Devils down by one.
Daly added another over 11 minutes later to increase the deficit to two before the Red Storm notched a third goal in the 29th minute of play to put the Blue Devils behind by three.
Opening the second half in a game reminiscent of last week's 3-0 loss to UConn, the Blue Devils fought back and allowed just one more goal before regulation play expired to bring the final score to 4-0.
Central tallied 18 shots in the match, six on goal, while St. John's also posted 18 shots, landing 12 on goal. Solomou led the squad with three shots on goal, closely followed by junior Tori Sousa, who posted two of her five shots on goal. Freshman Morgan Santoro also added a shot on goal.
The Blue Devils registered eight saves compared to six for the Red Storm and St. John's surpassed CCSU in corner kicks three to one.
CCSU hits the road for their next match up on Sunday, Sept. 8, where they will head to Lehigh. Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
