CCSU Women's Soccer Edged by Lehigh, 1-0
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team fell in a 1-0 decision to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks on Sunday in Bethlehem, PA. Lehigh earned its first win of the season in the match, improving to 1-2-0, while the Blue Devils drop to 0-4-0. CCSU outshot the Mountain Hawks 24-6, but ultimately failed to land one in the net.
Of its 24 shots, CCSU landed eight on goal. Leading Central on the offense was freshman Morgan Santoro, who registered three of her four shots on goal. Junior Tori Sousa landed two of her four shots on goal and junior Kerriann Welch led the squad in overall shots with six.
The Mountain Hawks scored 19 minutes into the match on a header from inside the left corner of the box by Lehigh's Darby Dustman. The two teams went into the half with the Blue Devils suffering from the 1-0 deficit which they were unable to overcome in the second half.
CCSU emerged with the advantage in shots (24-6), corner kicks (6-2) and shots on goal (8-2). Additional Blue Devils that contributed to the offensive strike included freshman Christiana Solomou (four shots) and seniors Allison Kelley and Rachel Cerrone who each posted two shots.
The Blue Devils return home for their next contest against the Army Black Knights on Friday, Sept. 13 at the CCSU Soccer Field in New Britain, CT. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and live video will be available, for free, on www.NECFrontRow.com.
