CCSU Women's Soccer Edges Bryant in Overtime
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team topped Bryant in overtime in their second road win of the season in Smithfield, RI on Friday. With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 4-3 in NEC play. Junior Kerriann Welch scored the first goal for CCSU and assisted senior Allison Kelley on the game-winner in overtime.
The match between the two squads remained scoreless throughout the first half and into the second until Bryant's Julie Vajda found the back of the net in the 59th minute of play to put the Bulldogs on the board.
The Blue Devils, finding themselves behind with plenty of time left, rebounded in the 77th minute when Welch dribbled the ball from midfield to the left side, shot past Bryant keeper Lauren Viverito and evened the score.
The squads continued to battle throughout regulation, but neither was able to gain the edge. Just 1:39 into overtime, Welch struck again, this time on an assist to Kelley who beat Viverito at the top of the box to net the game-winner for CCSU.
Having been outshot in the first half 12-5, the Blue Devil defense came out strong in the second period, holding the Bulldogs to just 5 shots. Central posted nine in the second half and the only shot of the overtime period.
Welch led the Blue Devil offense with two shots, both on goal, for one goal and one assist. Kelley, along with sophomore Cailynn Harding and freshman Morgan Santoro, posted two while junior Tori Sousa added three shots, one on goal.
Senior Nikola Deiter tallied four saves in 91:39 between the posts. Viverito also had four saves on the day.
The Blue Devils return home to close out the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 3 for senior day against NEC foe Wagner. The Seahawks are currently ranked third in the NEC. After today's win, Central is tied for fourth and looks to earn a spot in the NEC Championships.
