CCSU Women's Soccer Falls to Monmouth, 1-0
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team lost to Monmouth in a 1-0 decision on Friday night at the CCSU Soccer Field. The loss marks Central's first in conference play for the 2012 season making CCSU's record now 1-7 (0-1 NEC).
The Hawks (4-4-1, 1-0 NEC) outshot the Blue Devils 15 to six in 90 minutes of play. Central was led by sophomore Kerriann Welch, who took three shots, two on goal, on the day. Welch was followed by senior Cara Cavallari who posted two shots, both on goal.
Monmouth began the match by posting three shots in the first five minutes, one on goal. Just under 12 minutes into the game, the Hawks notched their only goal of the game when sophomore Alexa Freguletti scored a header into the bottom right corner of the net off of a corner kick from junior Dana Costello. The goal was Freguletti's second of the season and put Monmouth on top, 1-0. Play continued the rest of the half with Monmouth posting 12 shots, five on goal, and Central putting up two, one on goal.
CCSU kicked off the second half with a corner kick by Cavallari and a shot from Welch resulting in a save by Monmouth goalkeeper Jocelyn McCoy. The Blue Devils were able to put up four shots in the second half and hold Monmouth to only three, however, CCSU was not able to even the score and the play clock expired with the Hawks winning the contest, 1-0. In the last six games against Monmouth, the teams are now tied 3-3.
The Blue Devils will return to action this Sunday, Sept. 23 at Quinnipiac at 2 p.m.
