The Central Connecticut women's soccer team shut out NEC foe Mount St. Mary's on Sunday in Emmitsburg, MD, topping the Mountaineers by a score of 2-0. With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 5-11 on the season and 3-3 in NEC play.
Freshman Laura Gomez netted the game winner, notching the first goal of her career while senior co-captain Jewel Robinson scored the insurance goal with 20 minutes left in the second period.
CCSU dominated the field in the first half, managing to keep the ball deep in Mount territory for the majority of the period. The Blue Devils outshot the Mountaineers 11-4 in the first half alone, overall they prevailed in shots 23-12.
Despite the aggressive offensive front, the Blue Devils were unable to find the back of the net in the first period and the teams went into the locker rooms scoreless at halftime.
Gomez put the Blue Devils on the board just under nine minutes into the second half after junior Christina Boucher worked the ball to the front of the net. Robinson tapped it to Gomez and she finished the play for her first career goal.
In the 69th minute, Robinson dribbled past two defenders to take her shot, launching it low past Mount keeper Vicky Cocozza for CCSU's second and final goal.
