CCSU Women's Soccer Ties Harvard 0-0 in 2OT
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team (1-8-1) rendered Harvard (3-3-2) scoreless Wednesday night coming up with a 0-0 tie after two overtime periods. Central goalkeeper Nikola Deiter racked up 13 saves on the day and registered her second shutout of the season.
Harvard outshot Central 31-9 however, the Blue Devils' defense was on point. In addition to Deiter's 13 saves, the rest of the CCSU defense blocked five shots to deny the Crimson points on the board.
Harvard kicked off the match firing, posting two shots in the first two minutes of the game, the second answered with a save by Deiter. The Crimson failed to capitalize on two sets of back-to-back corner kicks in the first period. Juniors Jewel Robinson and Rachel Cerrone and freshmen Claire Walsh and Taylor O'Leary each posted a shot in the first half.
The second half started with another corner kick by Harvard, resulting in a blocked shot by Central's defense. The Blue Devils posted two shots in the second half compared to 14 by Harvard and scoreless competition continued until regulation play expired, sending the teams into overtime.
Robinson took the lead for Central in the first overtime period attempting two shots, one wide and one saved by Harvard goalie Bethany Kanten. CCSU held Harvard to just five shots in the ten-minute period and the clock expired with both teams still tied 0-0.
Harvard started the final overtime period with two shots followed up by a shot from freshman Cailynn Harding that went wide of the net. She posted the lone Central attempt at a goal in the final minutes of the game in double overtime before the clock expired, leaving both teams scoreless after 110 minutes of play.
Central (0-2 NEC) returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 30 at home against the Bryant Bulldogs at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs are currently 6-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
