CCSU Women's Soccer Tops New Hampshire 4-0
The Blue Devils earned their first win of the season Sunday clinching a 4-0 victory over New Hampshire at the University of Vermont tournament. The shutout is junior Nikola Deiter’s ninth of her career and displayed a well-rounded effort by CCSU. Central is now 1-2 on the season.
Central started the game dominating the Wildcat’s side of the field and giving their junior goalie, Erica Correa, plenty of pressure that never let up. Just over three minutes into the game, junior Jewel Robinson scored the first Blue Devil goal of the season with classmate Allison Kelley on the assist. The teams headed to the locker room with CCSU on top 1-0 at halftime.
The second half proved to be explosive for the Blue Devils. Just seven minutes into the half, Robinson set freshman Taylor O’Leary up for her first career goal. Central’s defense continued to hold strong and, with 26 minutes left in the game, sophomore Kerriann Welch scored the fourth goal of her career. Welch’s goal, assisted by Kelley, lofted the Blue Devils to a 3-0 lead.
Central rounded out the team effort with a goal from sophomore Lauren Varholak, the first of her career, with 1:18 left on the play clock. Senior Cara Cavallari and sophomore Christina Boucher were awarded assists on the play.
The Blue Devils matched the Wildcats in shots with ten and capitalized on their seven shots on goal. Kelley led the team with three shots, two on goal, closely followed by O’Leary with two on goal. Deiter claimed four saves for the game.
CCSU will kick off its first home game against Providence Sunday, Sept. 2 at 1 p.m.
