CCSU's Lavoie Wins it in Second Overtime
Junior Julie Lavoie scored her third goal of the season as the Central Connecticut women's soccer team posted a 2-1 double overtime victory over Robert Morris on Friday night in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams.
Lavoie's goal came 1:23 into the second overtime, and snaps a two-game losing streak for the Blue Devils. The home win gives Central a 3-3 record at home this season.
The Blue Devils trailed 1-0 at the half, but dominated much of the second half of play. They finished with a 24-11 advantage in total shots and a 12-4 edge in shots on goal. RMU goalkeeper Beck Schoenecker was forced to make 10 saves in the match.
Junior Tori Sousa tied the game 1-1 in the 52nd minute with a heads up play to pick up her second goal of the season. The Colonials committed a foul against Sousa at the top of the box to give the Blue Devils the free kick. Sousa quickly set up the ball at the top of the box, and before the Colonials could set up their defense, guided a kick over the RMU wall and past Schoenecker to tie the game.
Neither team would find the back of the net again in regulation, or the first overtime, as the Blue Devils went to double overtime for the first time this season.
Early in the second extra frame, Sousa again had a free kick, this time from around 15 yards outside the top of the box. Her kick hit the crossbar, was headed by an RMU player, and then fell at the feet of Lavoie, who kicked it into the back of the net for the victory. It was her second game-winner of the year.
The win moves Central to 3-7-0 overall and 1-0 in NEC play. Robert Morris is now 4-6-1 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Senior goalkeeper Nikola Deiter made three saves in net for the Blue Devils to record her third victory of the season. One of her saves came on a point blank shot late in the second half and helped preserve the tie for the Blue Devils.
Central is off until Monday night when they host Yale at 7 p.m. Fans can watch the game live by visiting www.NECFrontRow.com.
