Centenary Holds Off Rowan To Win, 1-0
HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (September 3, 2011) – In the final game of the Cyclone Kickoff Classic, senior Tatiana Kingston (Mountainside, N.J./Governor Livingston) scored in the 17th minute and the Centenary women’s soccer team (2-0) held on to defeat in-state rival Rowan (0-2), 1-0, Saturday in Hackettstown, N.J. No. 3 Otterbein (2-0) handed Drew (0-2) a 3-1 loss earlier in the day.
Rowan’s offensive attack put CC’s defense to the task, as the Profs took 17 shots to the Cyclones’ eight. RU recorded nine corner kicks on the day while Centenary did not take one.
A day after scoring four goals against Drew, CC’s offense was held in check by the Profs’ defense. The Cyclones tallied just two shots on goal but Kingston made hers count, as she scored on a free kick from 30 yards out. She drilled her shot to the upper right corner of the net for her first goal of the season. Junior goalkeeper Alyssa Hackelberg (Randolph, N.J./North Hunterdon) and the Cyclones’ defense did the rest to hold Rowan scoreless. Hackelberg finished with three saves in the contest.
Seniors Caitlin Veverka (Bayonne, N.J./Holy Family Academy) and Kristyn Lehmann (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) as well as junior Sara Smith (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) and freshman Laura Potter (Gilboa, N.Y./Gilboa-Conesville) were each named to the All-Tournament Team.
