Centre beats Southwestern 4-0 for first SCAC win
Centre's men's soccer team scored early and often as it downed Southwestern 4-0 and picked up its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory of the year.
Austin Hall (Indianapolis, Ind.) got the scoring started less than four minutes into the game when he was there to put back a Ryan Garvey shot that had rebounded off Southwestern goalkeeper Nick Pierce. The goal was the seventh of the year for Hall, who leads the team and is tied for fourth in the SCAC.
Already working with a lead, the Colonels went on to extend it to 3-0 by halftime with a pair of goals off set pieces. The first came at the 30 minute mark when Jeremy Carlson (Seattle, Wash.) headed in a Robbe Tarver (Houston, Tex.) free kick that came from just outside the box. Before the half, Ben Van Nevel (Louisville, Ky.) put in a header off a Carlson free kick from just inside midfield.
Early in the second half, Ryan Garvey (Louisville, Ky.) put the game out of reach with a goal on a second assist by Tarver.
Centre came in to the game off a 3-0 loss to No. 5 Trinity in which it was competitive before letting in two goals in the closing minutes. The Colonels didn't show any signs of a hangover from the loss however, as they reverted back to the form in which they had posted four straight shutouts and a 3-0-1 record in their previous four games.
"I am proud we have the resiliency to bounce back from a loss," said Centre head coach Jeb Burch. "Our players were focused and it showed, especially in how we moved the ball and executed in front of the goal."
The win puts the Colonels at 6-3-1 on the season and 1-1 in the SCAC going into a Texas road trip in which they take on Austin on Friday and Dallas on Saturday. Southwestern falls to 4-5-1 overall with a 1-1 record in the conference.
"Friday night helped us to see where we need to improve," Burch added.
"We took a positive step today, and I am excited about next weekend."
Centre goalkeeper Chris Jackson (Oxford, Ohio) made six saves before giving way to Alejandro Ariza (Bogota, Colombia), who made two stops in the shutout. Nick Pierce made six saves and Daniel Poole one for Southwestern. Centre took 15 shots to Southwestern's 13 while Southwestern held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
