Centre men drop SCAC opener 3-0 to No. 5 Trinity
In the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opener for both teams, the Centre College men's soccer team fell 3-0 to No. 5 Trinity University Friday, Sept. 30 in Danville, Ky.
The loss drops the Colonels to 5-3-1 overall and 0-1 in the SCAC, while Trinity improves to 6-0-2 and 1-0 in league play.
Centre played a hard fought game against the No. 5 team in the nation, but surrendered a goal just before halftime and two in the closing minutes for the 3-0 total. After a mostly evenly played first half, the Tigers' Josh Adams opened the scoring at the 40:10 mark in the first half when he took a pass from Andrew Soares, got free on the right side and beat Centre goalkeeper Chris Jackson (Oxford, Ohio).
"I thought we held well in the first half and were unfortunate to give up the goal with at the end," said Centre head coach Jeb Burch. "But you can't deny the second half, Trinity took the game."
In that second half, Trinity held a 9-2 shot advantage and dictated the flow of the game most of the way. However, Centre just missed a chance at an equalizer when a free kick by Robbe Tarver (Houston, Tex.) struck the crossbar with five minutes to go in the game.
Shortly after, Trinity's Brian Hines put the game away with back-to-back goals within 11 seconds of each other for the final 3-0 tally. Cameron Hogsett assisted on the first goal, while Zach Garcia tallied an assist on Hines' second score.
"There's not much to say tonight," Burch added. "We got beat by a better team. Trinity won the 50/50 balls, was more composed on the ball and took over the second half."
The Tigers out-shot Centre 20-8 on the night and held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Jackson took the loss, breaking a string of four straight shutouts for the senior goalkeeper. Jackson made seven saves in the defeat.
The Colonels will look to bounce back Sunday, Oct. 2 against Southwestern University. The SCAC match is set to start at 1 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
