Centre women close regular season with scoreless tie
The Centre women's soccer team finished out the regular season by playing to a scoreless draw with Birmingham Southern in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match Sunday in Birmingham, Ala.
The tie leaves Centre with a 12-3-2 overall record for the regular season and a 5-2-1 mark in the SCAC. As a result, Birmingham Southern, with a 10-4-2 overall record and 6-1-1 SCAC finish, edges the Colonels for the second seed and a bye in the SCAC Tournament.
The statistics were fairly even in the game as Birmingham Southern took 21 shots to Centre's 17 and held a 7-6 edge in corners. Senior goalkeeper Kelli Lenz (Louisville, Ky.) made seven saves for the Colonels in posting her fifth straight shutout and 12th of the season. Amber Hernandez made 10 stops for Birmingham Southern.
As the third seed in the conference tournament, Centre will take on sixth-seeded Sewanee on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Birmingham. The winner would then meet Birmingham Southern on Saturday at 3:30.
