Charleston Southern women defeat Georgia Southern
Jen Vroman entered the 2009 season opener with three career goals. She nearly matched that total with two markers Saturday afternoon to lead the Charleston Southern soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Georgia Southern University at Buccaneer Field.
The Lady Bucs (1-0) kicked off the season with a dominant opening half, filled with intense pressure and a 10-3 shot advantage.
There was plenty of action right out of the gates, but shots were scarce in the early going as both teams tried to settle in and find their groove. That was until the 20th minute, when Marky Boyce took possession of the ball just on the home half of midfield. She saw a streaking Vroman on the left side going towards the 18-yard penalty box, and she slid her through with a nice connecting pass.
Vroman received the pass, took a couple touches to get into position inside the 18, and sent the ball on the ground past both the final defender and GSU goalkeeper Lauren Santos.
Just three minutes later, Vroman was able to crack the defense one more time to wrap up her career day.
Lindsey Trexler was awarded a throw-in on the right side of the field, and she placed the ball on the feet of Caitlin Wesnesky. Wesnesky took a touch and sent the ball into the box, where Vroman was waiting in the midst of two defenders. The ball took a bounce and Vroman volleyed it into the back of the net for her second goal of the day, which proved to be the game-winner.
At one point in the second half, Vroman had a chance to notch the hat-trick, but her shot from 20 yards out went barely over the goal post.
The first half was totally dominated by the Buccaneers, but, despite being outshot 13-5, the Eagles created more chances for themselves in the second frame.
The added pressure was just enough to take away CSU goalkeeper Alyssa Budros' clean sheet, but not enough to notch the equalizer.
Krystin Smith was able to beat Budros in the 54th minute off a nice strike from the top of the 18 that found the upper left corner of the net.
Despite the goal and the added pressure from Georgia Southern (0-1), the Buccaneers held on for the win and now own a 1-0 record to start the 2009 campaign.
Budros finished the game with two saves and one goal allowed in 90 minutes of action to earn her first win of the season. Her counterpart on the other end of the field collected eight saves and allowed two goals for the loss.
Vroman, Trexler and Sarah Catenacci each attempted three shots on goal to lead the CSU attack.
