Cincinnati Shuts Out UConn for League Win
The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team garnered their first American Athletic Conference win of the year with a 3-0 triumph over UConn.
The Bearcats (7-3-2, 1-1-0 American) made it a point to jump on the Huskies (8-3-1, 1-1-0 American) early as junior Laura Rose's pressure on their defenders paid off. The forward was able to intercept a pass and notch UC's first goal at the 10th minute.
UC generated a 12-6 shot advantage in the first stanza and carried the one-goal lead into halftime.
The second half started much like the first half with Cincinnati coming out strong. The offensive pressure from the Bearcats paid off as they netted goals in the 56th and 57th minute to extend their lead to 3-0.
Natalie Smith tended goal for UC and tallied three saves in the match to shutout UConn.
CIN - Laura Rose (unassisted), 10th
Rose was putting pressure on the Huskies' defenders and was able to intercept a pass back to the keeper. With the net minder out of position, the junior tapped the eventual game-winning goal into the empty goal. CIN 1, CONN 0
CIN - Christi Mason (Vanessa Gilles, Jae Atkinson), 56th
Atkinson bent in a corner kick for UC, and Gilles headed the ball towards the goal. UConn's keeper came up with the save, but Mason was there for the rebound. CIN 2, CONN 0
CIN - Katy Couperus (Jae Atkinson), 57th
Atkinson bent in another beautiful corner, but this time it resulted in an immediate goal as Couperus' header found the back of the net. CIN 3, CONN 0
