Clan win big in conference home opener
Burnaby, BC - The SFU men's soccer team improved their undefeated record to 7-0 on Thursday night with a 5-0 win over the South Dakota School of Mines.
The Clan offence was clicking as they spread the offence around with five different players finding the back of the net.
"The chemistry is really coming along" said Adam Staschuk (Nanaimo, BC). "Everyone is starting to buy into the system. We are all getting more comfortable with it and it showed tonight".
The Clan took an early 1-0 lead with a goal scored from sophomore Ryan Dhillon (North Delta, BC) and never looked back.
Colin Jacques (London, ON) scored late in the first half to double SFU's lead with a brilliant assist from Joseph Martin (Kingston, Jamaica).
Adam Staschuk (Detla, BC) opened the second half with a goal as he pierced through the defensive line and found the back of the net.
South Dakota had no answers for the Clan as Jules Chopin (Kaslo, BC) and Glenn Paden (Lake Forest, WA) scored back-to-back goals in the middle of the second half.
"It has been a bit of a challenge when you try and integrate so many players as we had to, but everyone is adjusting really well and we're getting better every single week", said Head Coach Alan Koch.
SFU goalkeeper Scott Shewfelt (London, ON) had five saves in the victory, earning him his first shut out of the year.
With this win, the Clan improve to 7-0 on the season and 3-0 in conference play. They will be back in action at home facing the University of Mary Marauders on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on Terry Fox Field.
