CMU Fells RU 2-1 in RMAC Championships
Last Second Maverick Goal Fells #23 Rangers 2-1 in RMAC Championships
DENVER, Colo.: Regis (13-3-1) men's soccer drops to Colorado Mesa 2-1 in the RMAC Championship match.
In the seventh minute, junior Martin Maybin received a throw in from the right side, dribbled past defenders to the left and sent a curler past the Mavs goalie down to the bottom left of the goal.
After scoring the first goal of the 2013 RMAC Championship match, the Rangers were looking up throughout the rest of regulation play.
With the last minutes ticking down on the clock, the enthusiasm was high, but the Mavericks refused to give up. With less than three minutes left in regulation play, CMU gained the ball from RUs defenders in front of the goal and sent a screamer top left to even things up and extend the championship match in to overtime.
Then in extra effort to gain the ball and stop things before OT, the Rangers grabbed an unfortunate red card, putting them one man down for the remainder of the match.
No one scored in the first OT, and in the second things were looking quite similar. However, in the final countdown of the second overtime, Mesa raced down-field and earned a corner kick in their favor.
Off a corner kick, the Mavs passed in to their teammates and with three seconds left on the clock, scored the game-winner for the RMAC tournament championship title.
Freshman Connor Adkisson put in a valiant effort in the Ranger goal with many huge saves throughout the game, tallying seven on the day.
After the match, four Rangers received All-Tournament team honors including: freshmen Adkisson and Brian Strasbaugh, junior Maybin and senior Garrett Seitz.
South Central regional polls, as well as NSCAA national polls, come out Tuesday. With the rankings, more NCAA regional tournament information will be available. Follow regisrangers.com or Regis University Athletics on Facebook and Regis Athletics on Twitter for more tournament information.
