Coach of the Year, Freshman of the Year Highlight FGCU Men’s Soccer Postseason Honors
FORT MYERS, Fla. – After securing its second consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference regular season championship and the A-Sun tournament No. 1 overall seed in its first year of postseason eligibility, the FGCU men’s soccer team landed six student-athletes on the All-Conference teams, announced by the league office on Monday.
Highlighting the postseason accolades, fifth-year head coach Bob Butehorn was selected by his coaching peers for his second A-Sun Coach of the Year honor, while forward Xavier Silva (Boca Raton, Fla./North Broward Prep) was tabbed as the Freshman of the Year. Additionally, the Green and Blue landed three players on the All-Conference first team, two on the second team and All-Freshmen squad, and a pair of student-athletes on the inaugural Academic All-Conference team.
“I'm very proud and appreciative of the A-Sun recognition given to our players and our program,” said Butehorn. “It's an honor to have all of their handwork and dedication acknowledged by my A-Sun colleagues.”
Under Butehorn’s direction, the Green and Blue finished the 2011 regular season with a 10-5-2 overall record and a 7-1 mark in the A-Sun. As he continues his fifth season at the helm, Butehorn has accumulated a 45-35-8 record, including a 28-14-2 mark against A-Sun foes.
A finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, redshirt senior goalkeeper Adam Glick (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley HS) was named to the All-Conference first team for the second consecutive season, as well as, one of two Eagles on the A-Sun All-Academic team. The Leola, Pa. native has started 12 contests this season for the Eagles and ranks third in the A-Sun with a goals against average of 1.12 and fourth with a .759 save percentage. Glick has recorded 44 saves, with a pair of nine-save outings this year against Washington and at Stetson. The two-time team captain has also posted three shutouts in 2011, good for fifth in the A-Sun, and earned the A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week Award for the week of Sept. 12. Earning a pair of draws and totaling 10 saves through a pair of contests at the event, Glick was also selected as the Nike Portland Invitational Defensive MVP.
With a 3.43 GPA as a dual major in business management and marketing, Glick was also named to the A-Sun’s first-ever All-Academic team. The league’s preseason Defensive Player of the Year and unanimous first team pick, Glick has earned two A-Sun first team nods in his career and was also picked to the All-Freshmen team in his first season with the Eagles.
Also earning a spot on the A-Sun first team, junior defenseman Deion Jones (Tampa, Fla./Freedom HS) was also selected to the squad for the second straight season, and was also named to the All-Academic team. Jones has started in 15 games at defense and holds eight points on one goal and six assists, which rank fourth in the A-Sun and second on the team. The Tampa, Fla. product scored one goal and added four assists in A-Sun play. Jones has helped the Eagles’ backline post a trio of shutouts, including one in A-Sun play, while also contributing greatly to the 18-8 advantage in goals scored in league play. Earning a 3.52 GPA in environmental studies, the free-kick specialist joined Glick on the A-Sun’s first All-Academic team.
Two-time team captain and senior midfield leader Cristian Raudales (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee HS) rounded out the trio of first-teamers for the Green and Blue. In a solid senior campaign, Raudales has started 16 contests at midfield and leads the team with 13 points, which ranks eighth in the A-Sun. Ranked sixth in the league with a team-best six goals, including two game-winners, three of his goals have come while playing a man down, including a pair in the OT win against Mercer. Raudales also recorded his lone assist while adding four goals for a total of nine points in A-Sun play. The program’s all-team leader in points (41), goals (18) and game-winning goals (6), Raudales was named to the All-Conference second team in each of the previous two seasons.
Also atop the team points lead with 13, good for eighth in the A-Sun, on three goals and single-season record seven assists, two-time team captain Josey Portillo (Metairie, La./Grace King HS) was named to the All-Conference second team. Named to MAC Hermann Award watch list given to the nation’s top collegiate player, Portillo has started all 17 contests for the Green and Blue and ranks second in the league with his assist total. A preseason third team All-American by College Soccer News, the Metairie, La. native earned the A-Sun Player of the Week (Sept. 12) after scoring three points in the 4-0 win against URI. Also named to the A-Sun preseason All-Conference team, the program’s all-time assist leader (15) was selected to the A-Sun first team a season ago.
In his first year on campus, Silva has made good use of his time on the pitch, being named the top freshman in the league while picking up an All-Conference second team selection and an All-Freshmen nod. Silva has appeared in 13 contests, including five starts, at forward and ranks second on the team with 12 points. The newcomer holds five goals, good for eighth in the A-Sun, while adding a pair of assists this season. With nine points on four goals and one assist in league play, the Boca Raton, Fla. product’s three game-winners have all come in A-Sun contests and rank second in the league.
Rounding out the postseason accolades, defenseman Federico Crespo (Heredia, Costa Rica/St. Paul College/Universidad Latina) joined Silva on the league’s All-Freshmen team. Crespo has started all 17 games this season at defense and recorded his first collegiate point on an assist at ETSU (Oct. 16). The newcomer has contributed to backline effort which has held three opponents scoreless, including one in A-Sun play. With his transition ability from the defense position, the Heredia, Costa Rica native has also significantly added to the 18-8 advantage in goals scored against the A-Sun.
Making the program’s first-ever appearance, the Green and Blue will continue into the postseason as the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament No. 1 seed. The Eagles received a bye into the semifinals of the tournament where they will take on the winner of fourth-seeded Mercer and fifth-seeded Lipscomb on Friday, Nov. 11 in Johnson City, Tenn. The Bears and Bisons' opening quarterfinal match is set for Wednesday, Nov. 9 beginning at 4 p.m.
