Cobain, Akinoso net goals as King tops NGU
TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The King University men's soccer team may not have dominated the statistical categories on Tuesday night at North Greenville University, but they were ahead in the one that matters most, goals. Ryan Cobain netted a goal in the first half, and Joseph Akinoso found the back of the net in the second half as King took the 2-0 Conference Carolinas victory.
The Tornado (2-9-2, 2-4 CC) had a couple scoring chances early in the first half before Cobain broke through with his team-leading third goal of the season to put King ahead in the 16th minute.
With the lead, the Tornado tightened up their defense the rest of the half as they fended off numerous Crusader attacks. North Greenville (3-9-1, 1-5 CC) ripped seven shots the remainder of the half, putting five of them on net. However, King goalkeeper Kari Sveinsson was up to the task as he turned away all five Crusader shots.
The Crusaders continued to attack in the second half, but Sveinsson turned away their only shot that was on target in the 49th minute. On the offensive end, King made the most of their opportunities as Akinoso netted his first career goal in the 80th minute to give King a 2-0 cushion.
After the goal, North Greenville didn't have any scoring chances and the Tornado took the game 2-0. The Crusaders tallied more shots, 15-8 and more corner kicks, 7-4 than King. Sveinsson came up with six saves to earn his second win of the season.
With the win, King moves up to fifth place in the Conference Carolinas standings with two games left on their conference schedule.
King will be in action again on Saturday when they travel to Barton College. Kickoff from Wilson, N.C. is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
