GREENVILLE, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's soccer team battled Furman to a double overtime 2-2 draw in Southern Conference action on Friday Night. Hannah Gmerek (Anderson, S.C.) equalized the match with her second tally of the night in the 79th minute to force overtime.

The Cougars (10-6-1, 6-2-1 SoCon) could have clinched home field advantage in the opening round of the SoCon Championship with a win but will take the point they earn in the standings. The Cougars still control their own destiny and will play a home game in the tournament with at least one win or tie in their final two regular season matches.

The Cougars currently sit in third place in the league with 19 points. The teams get three points in the standing for each conference win and one for each tie. The top four teams host in the opening round.

CofC dominated possession on the night and outshot the Paladins by an 18-14 count while putting 12 shots on frame.

"Our team looked unreal tonight," said head coach Christian Michner. "We were incredible on both sides of the ball and our kids played their hearts out. This was a fun match between two great teams and Furman has a great soccer atmosphere.

"They kept a lot of their players behind the ball and we did a good job in maintaining possession and trying to break them down. We created so many great chances. Hannah Gmerek scored two truly world class goals."

Cricket Wise (Walhalla, S.C.) played all 110 minutes and made six saves on the night.

The Cougars commanded an early lead with a fifth minute mark by Gmerek who volleyed home a ball sent to the far post on a corner kick by Sarah Cardamone (Downingtown, Pa.).

Furman made the equaling tally in the 17th minute when Rachel Shelnutt was able to chip a ball over the Cougar keeper for her tenth goal of the season.

The Paladins then seized their first lead roughly ten minutes later when India Robinson headed home a rebound opportunity to put Furman up 2-1.

CofC stayed heavy on the attack throughout the second half until Gmerek picked up her second goal in the 79th minute of the match to push the score to 2-2. She once again volleyed in a ball inside the box which was this time sent in by Maryam Buazza (Katy, Texas).

The overtime period only yielded two shot attempts as the 2-2 score eventually went final and both teams came away with a point.

"We're a little disappointed to not get the win but we played well and to come here and get a tie is not a bad thing," said Michner. "We're building towards the conference tournament and a performance like this goes a long way."

The Cougars return to action on Sunday, Oct. 23 when the Cougars take on Wofford on the road at 2 p.m.
