Colombie Scores In Loss to UNH
DURHAM, NH – Nationally recognized New Hampshire University defeated the Iona College men's soccer team on Wednesday evening, 3-1. Senior Killian Colombie scored for a second straight game for the lone Maroon & Gold score. The Wildcats began the season ranked No. 19 in the country before losing to No. 15 Virginia to open the season. Since that point they had won four straight and the program entered Wednesday night receiving votes in the national coaches' poll.
Colombie gave the Gaels an early 1-0 in the 6' with his team-leading third goal of the season. Freshman Esad Mackic headed a ball in the box which deflected neatly to Colombie who one-touched it into the lower right portion of goal.
The Wildcats responded swiftly in the 10' with Donnett Sackie netting his second strike of the season off an assisted rebounded saved shot by Jonny Wolf. They mounted the offensive pressure for the next 35 minutes, holding the Gaels to just one additional shot in the first half. Sophomore Tomas Jamett had a shot on goal in the 31' that was saved by Lars Huxsohl.
The wave hit crescendo for New Hampshire in the 23' with Alex Valencia scoring the game-winner off an assist from Jack Doherty. Josh Bauer scored an insurance tally in the 70' off a free kick helper from Antonio Colacci.
Iona was out shot in the first half 10-2 and overall, 17-8. The Wildcats had nine shots on goal while the Gaels attempted four. New Hampshire had a 3-1 edge in corner kick chances.
Colombie ended the game with a team-best four shots. Freshman Mauro Bravo came off the bench and placed two on-target kicks in 37 minutes of action.
Junior Juan Alcantara made six saves in net.
The Maroon & Gold have the weekend off and return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at home against Fairleigh Dickinson. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 PM.
