Colonels bounce back with 2-0 win over Southwestern
After opening its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference slate with a loss, the Centre women's soccer team bounced back with a 2-0 victory over Southwestern University on Sunday in Danville, Ky.
Sophomore Morgan Collins (Utica, Mich.) scored both of the Colonels' goals, with freshman Anne Mitchell (Fayetteville, Ark.) assisting both times. The goals were the sixth and seventh of the season for Collins, who leads the team and ranks fourth in the conference. Mitchell's assists were her third and fourth of the year.
The goals were nearly identical, with Collins finishing with a header off a Mitchell cross from the right side. The first gave Centre a lead with 17:52 remaining in the first half while the second provided a more comfortable margin with 26:55 to go in the game.
Senior goalkeeper Kelli Lenz (Louisville, Ky.) made four saves in posting her seventh shutout of the season. Southwestern's Sarah Nonaka made six saves. Centre outshot Southwestern 10-7 overall while Southwestern had a 5-3 edge in corners.
Centre improves to 7-2 on the year and evens its SCAC record at 1-1 while Southwestern falls to 4-4-1 overall and 0-2 in the conference. Next up for the Colonels is a road trip in which they travel to Austin on Friday and Dallas on Sunday.
