Colonels play to 1-1 tie at Sewanee
After 110 minutes of play, Centre and Sewanee were unable to decide a winner as the teams played to a 1-1 draw in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference soccer action Friday in Sewanee, Tenn.
Sewanee was first to get on the board, scoring on a set piece just before halftime when Ford Emerson headed in a ball from Will Morgan.
"Sewanee was tougher than us in the first half," said Centre head coach Jeb Burch, whose team went to the break trailing 1-0. "We knew set pieces would be a big part of the game, and to give one up was frustrating."
However, Centre responded six minutes into the second half as Josh Settle (Bowling Green, Ky.) scored his sixth goal of the year on an assist by Austin Hall (Indianapolis, Ind.). Centre was able to create chances, outshooting Sewanee 11-5 in the second half and 20-17 for the game, but was unable to convert on any of the oppontunities.
"We regrouped, and we just kept getting stronger and stronger as the game went on," Burch added. "We certainly had our chances but just didn't take them."
It was Centre's fifth overtime game of the season and the team's second tie. The Colonels' record stands at 8-3-2 overall with a 3-1-1 record in SCAC play while Sewanee is 6-4-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the conference.
"Sewanee has always been a tough place to play, and tonight was a good example of that," said Burch. "Yet we salvaged a point from the draw and will move on."
Senior goalkeeper Chris Jackson (Oxford, Ohio) made five saves in goal for Centre while Derek Williams made seven stops for Sewanee.
Centre returns to action when it hosts Maryville College on Monday at 7 p.m.
