Colorado College Blanks Banana Slugs
No. 24 Colorado College didn’t waste any time taking charge against UC Santa Cruz on Friday afternoon.
Daniel Wright scored the only goal the Tigers would need 4:01 into the contest and the defense recorded its eighth shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over the Banana Slugs in a neutral-site contest at the University of Dallas' Crusader Field.
Wright’s goal, which was set up by Matt Fechter, proved to be his fourth game winner of the season and the seventh of his career.
The senior forwards have combined on scores five times during the last eight contests.
Fechter struck for his Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference leading 13th goal of the season in the 29th minute, then set up a tally by senior defender Nick Lammers 46 seconds into the second half.
It marked the third time this season CC’s All-American has recorded two or more assists in a game and the fourth time he has set up the deciding score in 2012.
Forrest Marowitz stopped the only two shots the Slugs put on target before giving way to freshman Ian Horne with 5:11 remaining. The senior goalkeeper improved to 8-0-0 for the season and has allowed only one goal in his last eight games.
The Tigers improved to 11-3-0 and extended their season-long winning streak to five games. UCSC slipped 6-6-1 overall.
Colorado College returns to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Sunday against the Crusaders.
