Colorado College Overcomes Wind and Wildcats
Senior forward Brandon Ogilvie struck for a pair of goals as the Colorado College men’s soccer team celebrated the end of the first block with a 3-1 victory over Johnson & Wales University in a non-conference game on Wednesday afternoon at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
Taking the field just hours after completing finals and turning in papers, the Tigers extended their winning streak to four on a day when conditions were anything but optimal.
“The guys played through adverse conditions on a small field with wind gusts reaching 30 miles per hour,” head coach Horst Richardson said. “It was important to get a game in right away to shake the guys up and get focused on our conference games this weekend in Texas.”
Despite playing into the wind during the first half, CC was able to take a 2-1 lead.
Ogilvie opened the scoring just 5:35 into the contest when he converted on his second penalty kick of the season.
The lead, however, lasted only 12 minutes. The Wildcats tied the game in the 18th minute when Andy Siddoway scored on a wind-aided direct kick.
The Tigers took the lead for good with a little more than 15 minutes remaining in the first half when Ogilvie pounced on a through ball from senior midfielder Lorenzo Pozzolini and beat JWU goalkeeper Trevor Shepherd. It marked the first time in his career that Ogilvie scored twice in the same game.
With the wind at its back, Colorado College had the territorial advantage in the second half and recorded a 9-2 advantage in total shots.
JWU nearly tied the game in the 75th minute on a shot by JP Mile, but junior defender Andrew Worthington cleared the ball off the line with a sliding tackle to preserve CC’s lead.
The Tigers added a late tally when the wind held up a goal kick by Shepherd, and sophomore midfielder Ryan Huettel caught up with the bouncing ball and sent a volley over the JWU keeper’s arms and into the net. Huettel is now riding a career-best three-game points streak.
Colorado College, 4-2-2 overall and 3-0-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, returns to league play with a 3 p.m. contest on Friday at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas.
