COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado College struck for three consecutive goals, including a pair by Sarah Schweiss during the second half, to rally for a 3-2 victory over the University of Denver Sunday afternoon at Stewart Field.

Schweiss tied the game in the 68th minute when she knocked home the rebound off a corner kick, then struck for the game winner with 7:02 remaining after running down a pass from senior forward Jaclyn Silsby and deftly placing a shot from the right side of the box into the top left corner.

“It was great ball through by Jaclyn to put me in,” Schweiss said. “I was just thinking keep calm as I was going in, and I put it right where I wanted to put it.”

The junior midfielder also made a big defensive play in the final minute to deny one final scoring chance for DU.

“She’s got a ton of heart and works so hard,” head coach Geoff Bennett said. “She took a cross in the face with 20 seconds left to prevent them from getting a ball in (to the box). She’s plays with a lot of passion. You don’t learn to that … it’s in you.”

Schweiss was quick to point out that every member of the team would do the same thing in that situation.

"It didn’t feel too good, but it kept the ball out of the box,” she said. “The whole team has that mentality. We’re going to fight to the last minute to win a game.”

The Tigers squared their season and Colorado Cup record at 1-1-0.

Senior forward Rachel Herron started CC’s comeback in the 14th minute when she pounced on a deflection at the top left edge of the box, stepped around a Pioneer defender, and put a crossing shot into the upper right corner.

Herron’s marker came just 56 seconds after freshman forward Lauren Conley gave the Pioneers a two-goal advantage when she lofted a shot into the left side of the net.

Denver got on the board in the first minute on an own goal.

The game changed completely in the second half when the Tigers made a tactical change on its back line, utilizing four defenders instead of its customary three.

“We made an adjustment a halftime for a couple of things,” Bennett said. “We were playing the same system as last year up until that point. We wanted to give it a chance because our midfield block is so strong, but there comes a point where it’s not working. We went four in the back and I thought we looked so comfortable and so composed, and we were still attacking with authority and speed. It was great.

“It’s kind of scary. We haven’t trained with those four together at all this year. They’ll be training a lot together in the coming weeks. The system still allows us to attack with five players.”

During the final 45 minutes, Colorado College outshot DU 11-0 to finish the game with an 18-4 advantage.

“Our defense was amazing,” Schweiss said. “You don’t win with just offense. You win with a whole team. Everyone stepped up to the plate and did a great job in the second half. It was team win.”

CC freshman goalkeeper Rowan Frederiksen made one save while recording her first collegiate victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Cassidy Rey stopped five shots for the Pioneers, who slipped to 0-1-1 on the season.

The Tigers travel to Hamilton, N.Y., next Saturday to play Colgate University.
