Concord tops King 1-0
BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University women's soccer team continued their homestand on Wednesday afternoon when they hosted nonconference opponent Concord University. Both teams had scoring chances in the first half, and Concord found the back of the net in the second frame to take the 1-0 win.
In the fourth minute, Concord's Emily Cole ripped a shot that hit the post, and followed that with another shot that went wide left a minute later. King goalkeeper Morgan Lawson registered a save in the 13th minute as Kari Simon ripped a shot that was turned away.
The Tornado (0-3) then moved play to the other end of the field as Rachel Thorpe laced a shot that was saved by Mountain Lion keeper Kristin Twomey. Only 30 seconds later, she ripped a shot that sailed high. Thorpe then had a couple more chances in the 29th and 30th minutes. She had a shot saved in the 29th minute, before she took a lead pass fromRayna Spears and ripped a shot that hit the crossbar.
Concord (2-1) finally broke through in the 52nd minute as Simon took a pass from Abby Barber, and took a shot from the right side of the field, and placed it in the upper left 90 to give the Mountain Lions a 1-0 advantage.
The Tornado had a chance in the 72nd minute as they took a corner kick, and Katie Keys ripped a shot wide. Thorpe followed with a shot that went high a minute later to keep the score at 1-0. King couldn't muster any other scoring chances as Concord hung on for the 1-0 win.
Concord outshot King 12-8 while the Tornado had five corner kicks to Concord's three. Thorpe led the Tornado with six shots, putting three on goal. In her first start of the season, Lawson registered five saves.
King is in action again on Saturday when they host Emmanuel College at 3:00 p.m. at Parks Field.
