Cornell Comes From Behind to Earn Draw on the Road
ONEONTA, N.Y. – Cornell salvaged a tie on the road against Hartwick on Sunday afternoon, scoring the tying goal with 13 minutes remaining. Cornell (0-1-2) got its goal from Jake Rinow 19 minutes after Hartwick (1-1-2) took the lead.
Cornell equalized in the 77th minute when Hartwick's goalie played a back pass with his hands, setting up a free kick from the right edge of the penalty box. Sophomore forward Daniel Haber lofted the kick into the box, and Patrick Slogic got a head on it, sending the ball backward into the center of the box. Defender Jake Rinow was waiting for the scraps, and he finished with power to tie the game. Rinow celebrated by running to midfield and attempting a cartwheel.
With 1:58 left in regulation, Hartwick's Simon Greatwich, already on a yellow card from the first half, was ejected from the game for a hard tackle. That gave the Big Red a man advantage for the rest of the contest. Heading into overtime, Hartwick had taken 12 shots to Cornell's 11, and only two of the Big Red's attempts were on goal.
Neither side was able to get off a shot in the first overtime, but the Big Red controlled the second. Haber, who led the team with four shots, had the best opportunity to score with 6:10 left when he received a pass from Will Ogden and slotted the ball low and to the right. Hartwick keeper Mateo Munarriz was equal to the challenge, sliding on his back to keep the ball out of the net and preserve the tie. Junior forward Tyler Regan took a weak shot 20 seconds before the final whistle that Munarriz also stopped without trouble.
The first half saw Hartwick hold a 5-3 advantage in shots, but Cornell had the best chance when a long airborne pass landed at Rinow's feet just outside the penalty box. With no one in front of him, Rinow fired the ball low and left past Munarriz, but the ball kept going left and went wide by a foot.
During halftime, the rain started coming down, making for a slick playing surface and ball in the second half.
Hartwick took advantage of a free kick from the right side in the 56th minute for their goal. Greg Mathers took the kick and floated it to the far side of the post. Matthew Robertson was waiting for the ball and headed it down closer to the net. Will Broomfield played cleanup duty, knocking the header past Rick Pflasterer with his foot.
Cornell returns to action Friday night when it plays host to Long Island University at 7 p.m. as part of the Cornell Big Red Inaria Tournament. The Big Red finish the tournament Sunday at 1 p.m. when it takes on visiting Hofstra.
