Cottrell, MSU beats clock, draws with ASU
SAN ANGELO, Texas - Midwestern State freshman Ashley Cottrell delivered her first collegiate goal with just a second to spare Friday night as the Mustangs earned a 1-1 draw here with Angelo State.
"These girls fought and fought and fought in the second half," MSU coach Jeff Trimble said. "We had some great chances and it was great for the girls to experience getting the game tied up. I'm very proud of the girls' effort."
The Mustangs took advantage of a Rambelle foul with just 13 seconds remaining allowing senior midfielder Maddie Fraser to float the ball into the 18-yard box on a free kick.
MSU senior Hanna Staley attempted to head the ball deflected toward sophomore Katy Catney who took a swing at it also mis-striking the ball. Cottrell sprinted to it and launched into the back of the net narrowly beating the final horn.
"It was an amazing moment," Trimble said. "It struck the net with maybe a second on the clock.'
The draw snapped a four-game skid to move the Mustangs to 0-4-1 on the season and to 0-0-1 in league play while Angelo State went to 2-2-1 and 0-0-1.
The Rambelles drew first blood on freshman Ashley Exford's first goal of the season on a header off of a corner kick from junior Kara Edwards in the 40th minute.
"It was disappointing," Trimble said. "We just didn't go to the ball."
Trimble lauded the play of his newly constructed back line featuring a pair of freshmen in Alex Edwards and Alexandra Copp making their first starts at defender.
"They did a really good job and Copp did a great job in the middle," Trimble said. "I'm very happy with the way they played. Along with (junior Anna) Molen and (senior Berklee) Dressler, they didn't give up much at all in the run of play."
Trimble also pointed to the standout play and hustle of sophomore forward Payton Fookes.
The Mustangs battle Incarnate Word in an LSC match Sunday at Benson Stadium in San Antonio. Kickoff is set for noon.
